IPOH: Vale International SA, whose transhipment project here has become the subject of a feud between two brothers who are also major shareholders of Integrax Bhd, has received the greenlight to build its own jetty.
The Perak government has agreed to allow Vale to construct its own jetty in Lumut to accommodate its proposed iron ore transhipment project.
State investment committee chairman Datuk Hamidah Osman said the Brazilian mining giant was expected to start the initial construction work in July.
“With the latest decision, the issue for Integrax to upgrade the facilities at its subsidiary, Lekir Bulk Terminal (LBT), will not arise anymore,” she toldStarBiz yesterday.
The upgrading of facilities was originally supposed to be at Integrax subsidiary Lekir Bulk Terminal (LBT) to accommodate the transhipment of the iron ore.
However, due to the disagreement between the brothers Halim Harun Rasip (who is against the project) and Amin (who supports the project) the upgrading had been put on hold since 2009.
LBT was required, under a 10-year contract with Vale, to upgrade the terminal at RM280mil
A conditional transhipment agreement signed between LBT and Vale has since lapsed due to the differences arising between both brothers.
Hamidah said the feud between the two brothers over the Vale transhipment project was now irrelevant.
“As far as the state is concerned, the conflict between the two brothers is not an issue anymore. Whether the feud is resolved or not, it will not affect Vale's plan to invest in the project,” she said.
The transhipment project is only a short-term measure; over the long term, Vale will develop an iron ore complex including its own jetty in Lumut.
The two brothers hold a combined 37% stake in Integrax through Halim Rasip Holdings. A further 16% in Integrax is held by Perak Corp Bhd.
Due to the disagreement, the upgrading of facilities at LBT, had been put on hold since last year.
Hamidah said Vale's representatives had given its word again that the company was committed to the iron ore processing project during a meeting with the state government recently. She said the state government would be sending a team to visit Vale's facilities in Brazil in April.
“Both the Vale plant in Brazil and the proposed plant to be built in Lumut are located in a tourism zone.
“In this sense, the Vale management is confident that it will be able to fulfill the detailed environmental impact assessment requirement for the project in Lumut,” she said.
The state government hopes that the iron ore-processing project will instantly impact the Perak economy, once implemented.
