So far, covering PAS events has been the most civil, pleasant and enjoyable of affairs. The party is organised, you are greeted by friendly stewards, the media desk is helpful, and they don’t whack journos up.
Anwar Ibrahim. WOW! Some of his loyalists really think he is PM already. At last Thursday’s ceramah in KL, when the “superstar” went on stage, photographers were yelled at to sit down, etc and someone even threw a tiny piece of cardboard at me and hit my right arm. Even when you cover Mahathir, the media has a better time.
Back to PAS, this year for the first time, the party is holding its Muktamar or Meeting in Ipoh, Perak. The main venue is Stadium Indra Mulia, the indoor stadium in the sports village that includes a velodrome and an Olympic standard swimming stadium that even has a wave pool (one of the few in the late 80s/early 90s).
I think the highlight has to be Hadi Awang. Nik Aziz greeted Hadi with a brief embrace before moving into the hall. PAS leaders were still assembled in a line as the opening ceremony proper had not even begun. It started with a PAS’s anthem, I believe, which praised ALLAH. The irony is Hadi Awang is standing on stage with Kamaruddin Jaafar, secretary-general and Anwar loyalist, but without the Spiritual Advisor, Nik Aziz.
Dr Dzulkefly on the left. Others, not sure…./JYPix
I am up in Penang already as I din want to be caught in a jam later. But will return after nomination tomorrow. By the way, Harakah SMS news alerts reported this morning that Nik Aziz + Vice-Presidents will support Anwar tomorrow. Note the absence of Hadi and Nasharuddin.
It’s REALLY SUCH A PLEASANT AFFAIR. People are helpful, most that I met spoke fluent English especially those on the media desk. PKR’s media department, gee, it’s like trying to get hold of George Bush, who may be easier to access. HA HA HA HA HA HA.
As this is my first Muktamar, I am again surprised. You know how The Star only publishes photos of PAS/Kelantan men in serbans, robes and women fully covered. Well, the media officer who assisted me is totally covered except her face and hands. She speaks fluent English and surely beats some more “liberally dressed” media executives.
Nizar was also surprisingly polished (sorry but if you hang around some political parties, such things come as a shock), tall and handsome. =) Also saw Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad who voiced support for the Bar Council forum, Hassan Ali. Everyone just seemed incredibly polished and civilised.
Lee Boon Chye from PKR was also present.
Ngeh Koo Ham came late, AFTER HADI!!! And then rushed in without even shaking the other leaders hands, I think. Did he shake their hands? He just kinda disappeared into the hall….
From media reports, the party is also incredibly democratic compared to other Pakatan parties and definitely the BN, who only has “sokong-ers”.
I recommend people to attend. They have opened the event for non-Muslim observers, I believe. =)
The experience is just so different from imagined. It’s a really civilised meet, from the opening ceremony — no rowdy crowds, no crazy aggressive fans pushing you around, shouting at you, throwing cardboard at you….. I think these guys can run the country, maybe just not with Hadi at the top. Treachery is not on….
Can’t wait to go back and find out more. =)
Erm, PAS Supporters Club? Even they look more decent than the MCA fellas……/JYPix
